Borrowing Policies

Our Library is open for business each and every school day. In addition to scheduled library class, students are welcome to stop in and exchange books when their classroom teacher allows.

Borrowing Policies:

  • How Many Books Can I Check Out

  • Which Books Can I Check Out?

  • When Do I Need to Return My Books?

Please see your grade level below to find answers to these questions.

Kindergarten - Students are allowed to borrow 1 item each week. Though this item may be selected from any area in our library (picture books, fiction, nonfiction, magazines), students begin the year learning about each section of the library separately and will not have the freedom to use each section right away.  All library books should be returned each week during regularly scheduled class time (see class schedules).  If a child forgets to return a book on library day, he or she may still select and check-out another book, with a note attached asking that the forgotten book at home be returned the very next day. If a child again forgets to return both of these books, no further books will be allowed to be brought home until the missing two have been returned to our library.

Grade 1 - Students are allowed to borrow 2 items each week. The first item may be selected from any area in our library (picture books, fiction, nonfiction, magazines). The second item must be from our Beginning Reader section. The BR section contains "practice reading" books which have controlled phonics and larger text. For more information about these books, see "Our Collection." All library books should be returned each week during regularly scheduled class time (see class schedules).  If a child forgets to return books on library day, he or she may hold books until the next day and then stop by for an exchange.

Grade 2 - Students are allowed to borrow 2 items each week from any area in our library. They may select from picture books, fiction, nonfiction, and magazines.  All library books should be returned each week during regularly scheduled class time (see class schedules).  If a child forgets to return books on library day, he or she may hold books until the next day and then stop by for an exchange

Grade 3 - Students are allowed to borrow 3 items each week from any area in our library. They may select from picture books, fiction, nonfiction, and magazines.  All library books should be returned each week during regularly scheduled class time (see class schedules).  If a child forgets to return books on library day, he or she may hold books until the next day and then stop by for an exchange.

Grade 4 - Students are allowed to borrow 4 items each week from any area in our library. They may select from picture books, fiction, nonfiction, and magazines.  All library books should be returned each week during regularly scheduled class time (see class schedules).  If a child forgets to return books on library day, he or she may hold books until the next day and then stop by for an exchange.

Grade 5 - Students are allowed to borrow 5 items each week from any area in our library. They may select from picture books, fiction, nonfiction, and magazines.  All library books should be returned each week during regularly scheduled class time (see class schedules).  If a child forgets to return books on library day, he or she may hold books until the next day and then stop by for an exchange.

Reference  - Reference materials are our tools for finding information. They may be checked out by students and teachers for the school day only. In this section you will find encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, access to the Internet and more! Due to their high cost and frequent use, reference materials do not usually leave the school building. However, if a family has a special request for research projects, parents may come to school to check these items out.

Our Collections

Find out what types of materials our library has for you to borrow.

What does our library contain?

The library at Stony Lane Elementary School contains approximately 11,000 print items, 1,000 eBooks accessible on most devices using  Follett's Destiny Discover App available in your favorite app store.  Print materials are divided into 5 main sections in the library.

BR - Beginning Readers; practice reading books with controlled vocabulary and word count. These books are identified with a green dot on the spine and are in order by the first letter of the author's last name.

E - Everyone Fiction books; although these are mostly fiction picture books, these books do not necessarily have a low reading level.  Most of these books are fiction picture books and are enjoyed by readers of all ages. These books are identified with the letter E and the first three letters of the author's last name on the spine label.

FIC - Fiction Chapter Books All books in this section are fiction stories, usually of longer length than the E section and the text is most important and does not usually rely on illustrations if included; predominantly chapter books.  These books are identified with the letters FIC and the first three letters of the author's last name on the spine.

NONFICTION - Books in this section are informational books, usually nonfiction, though graphic novels, folk and fairy tales can also be found in this area. These books are arranged by subject using Dewey Decimal Numbers.

REFERENCE - Reference materials are our tools for finding information. They may be checked out by students and teachers for the school day only. In this section you will find encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, access to the Internet, and more! Due to their high cost and frequent use, reference materials do not usually leave the school building. However, if a family has a special request for research projects, parents may come to school to check these items out.

MAGAZINES - Historically we have subscribed to 5 different magazines for students, although not all are renewed each year.  Back issues may be kept for up to 3 years. ChickaDee, Discovery Girl, LEGO Kid Jr., National Geographic for Kids, Ranger Rick, and Sports Illustrated for Kids.  Magazines are not current at this time.

Donations Our school library is happy to accept any donations in good condition for consideration to add to our library collection. However, due to space constraints, we can not always keep your book as a part of our library. If your book is not added to our library, we will place it in our free book box, where students are free to take a book or give a book at anytime. Also, because of time and cost, unfortunately we are not able to add a book plate to donation books, sorry!

Growing Library Program

Our fund raising program to get the newest titles into student hands throughout the school year.

What is the Growing Library Program?

Our Growing Library program helps to add many popular titles to our library collection. Seed books are kept in the library and may be picked by your family at any time. A popular time for picking a book to "Grow our Library" is during our annual open house in September when all books are on display. Cost of books are most often between $12 and $16. It is usually less than the cover price as we get a library discount and do not pay sales tax.

To join in the harvest, simply stop by our library, pick a book, fill out the dedication slip found inside, make a check payable to Stony Lane Elementary School for the amount indicated, and choose your book plate style: either our growing book or a school photo. The book plate will be placed in the front of the book for all to see. Please note that if you select your child's picture book plate, it is the current school photo which appears on the book plate.  If your child is absent on school picture day we will wait for the picture retake or use the growing book clip art.

Stony Lane Book Award

Our annual school-wide book battle held during Reading Week.

2018 Winner:  After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got back up Again by Dan Santat

Started in 2003, our Stony Lane Book Award battle takes place each spring during Reading Week.  Mrs. Marshall begins scouring professional journals and review sites each fall, putting together a list of new and note-worthy potential nominees.  Next, staff volunteers meet during the winter to read, discuss, and narrow the field of candidates to just 5 hopeful titles.  Finally, during Reading Week our entire school community takes part in the fun of sharing books, lively discussions, campaigning, and voting for their favorite.  Join us by reading along at home and stopping by our polling place on voting day!  All are welcome; and we even accept absentee ballots during Reading Week for those voters who know they will miss Voting Day.
