⭐ Grade 5 Science Interim Assessment Practice!!! ⭐
Adolescence has always been a time of angst and transition in human development. Yet, a growing body of evidence is sounding an alarm about the state of mental health in teens today. Not only have major medical organizations declared state of emergencies in children’s mental health, but the U.S. Surgeon General issued a ‘Youth Mental Health Advisory’. In our school, we have undertaken a number of strategies to address youth mental health needs, including: Open Circle lessons and discussions Mindfulness moments Training our staff in Youth Mental Health First Aid. Youth Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training that teaches parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors and health and human services workers and any other citizen how to identify, understand and respond to an adolescent (ages 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. Everyone can benefit from Youth Mental Health First Aid training. Even before COVID, youth were reporting high levels of stress and anxiety. Many children and youth are still suffering COVID’s impact. Engaging teens in conversations about what they may be feeling or experiencing can be challenging. Having more adults in our community knowing how to approach these hard conversations and what they can say or do to help can be game changers for our youth. I encourage every parent of an adolescent to consider taking this practical, skills-based online course. The Washington County Coalition for Children is offering the free course online to make it easier for busy parents to participate. See the attached Youth Mental Health flyer for more details.
